Dying Plant Help: Expert Tips from The Flower Pot

November 07, 20253 min read

So we've all been there. You buy a plant that you think will look awesome and make your home lovely, you bring it home, put it in your favourite pot (if you didn't buy it with one already) and then a few weeks later, you see it starting to deteriate. So you water it more, then less, then mist it, then more water, and panic, and then the plant is well and truly dead!

So, what should you do when you start to see your plant going downhill? Firstly, don't panic, you'll probably find a tiny change to your plant maintenance can completely save your plant, and the last thing you should do is just 'chuck' water at the problem!

It's true, I've been known to ditch a plant in the past and start again by just buying a new one (don't tell Andy, he probably thinks it's the same one I've saved!), but spend a small amount of time on working out the issue can completely save your plant.

Normally, the biggest issue with keeping house plants is the location that you are putting the plant into, for example, most house plants hate direct sunlight, and even the glimpse of it can scorch the leaves and ruin your plant. Similarly, plants that love sunlight should be in a window or somewhere they'll enjoy. I am always happy to help advise on what plants go well in which areas of your home, so please feel free to ask away if you're looking for something for a particular spot.

The next big issue that people come across is watering plants. Whether you've got into a daily habit of watering plants, when actually they need watering once a week, or whether you've bought a plant like a fern that like water and you've neglected it for weeks, it's really important to know upfront what care your plant needs when you buy it so that you start your watering off on the right setting!

A basic APP that's completely free is 'Plant Watering Reminder' where you can add your plants and set how often they need to be watered, if nothing else it works as a reminder list for you to reference - I can help with letting you know how often each plant should be watered and then you can go from there. The link for one I use is here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/plant-watering-reminder-care-for-indoor-plants/id1261713018but there are similar ones on Apple and Android APP stores.

Most plants come with plant care symbols like these below, and although they rarely have the text with them, I'm happy to share the full list of symbols and meanings with anyone that wants them.

Something else that I'm now offering is plant diagnosis, so if you've got a plant that's struggling, you can send me pictures of the plant issue and I'll do my best to come back to you with what you need to do to fix the issue!

Hope you all absolutely love your (healthy!) plants and pots as much as I do, and if you need any help with anything, I'm only a message or call away from helping you!

Enjoy!
